The Office for Corporate Communication (OCC) is responsible for all corporate and internal communication activities of the Organization. It ensures coherence and consistency in FAO’s corporate messaging and communications’ outputs, as well as enables cost-effectiveness in use of communication-related resources across the Organization.

 

FAO Consultant/PSA and Call purpose

 

The purpose of this call is to attract talent with experience and background in the area of communication to populate
Consultant/PSA rosters for the following profiles:

 

  • General Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) Communication Consultant (Coordination)
General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) is a regional fisheries management organization (RFMO) established under the provisions of Article XIV of the FAO Constitution. The main objective of the GFCM is to promote the development, conservation, rational management and best utilization of living marine resources as well as the sustainable development of aquaculture in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. http://www.fao.org/gfcm/it/

 

  • Coastal Fisheries initiative (CFI) Communication Consultant (Coordination)
The Coastal Fisheries Initiative (CFI) is a partnership of six organizations (CI, FAO, UNDP, UNEP, World Bank, WWF), that has been developed and is funded within the Global Environment Facility (GEF) framework of safeguarding the world oceans and the marine environment. CFI encompasses three geographically focused projects – Indonesia, Ecuador and Peru (Latin America), and Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal (West Africa) and two cross cutting projects. CFI is focused on strengthening the livelihoods of coastal communities that rely on fisheries for their employment and food security needs. http://www.fao.org/in-action/coastal-fisheries-initiative/en/

 

Reporting Lines

 

The Consultants/PSAs will report directly to Officers within the unit they are selected to work in. If outside of OCC, the Consultant/PSA will work under the functional supervision of OCC.

 

Technical Focus
Support to communication and outreach of FAO’s work in the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, with focus on sustainable development of natural aquatic resources, and social and economic development for fisheries communities.

 

Tasks and responsibilities

 

The generic functions for each profile will include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Provide overall communication support (media, web/social media, publications, outreach/campaigns, etc) to various branches and teams;
  • Provide overall communication support to focal points for the technical departments;
  • Support coordination between OCC and FAO’s Regional Offices and Liaison Offices;
  • Identify strong FAO stories to promote with journalists or media outlets
  • Support the implementation of media/communication partnerships between FAO and external parties;
  • Prepare talking points, media briefs, news background briefs, speeches, Q&A, presentations and other communication products for management;
  • Ability to communicate importance of fisheries issues and to connect them to broader development issues
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

 

Minimum Requirements

 

  • Advanced University Degree (for consultants)/ University degree (for PSAs) in communication, journalism, political science or related subject.
  • One year (Category C consultant/PSA) or five years (Category B consultant/PSA) of relevant experience in communication, public information, or journalism
  • For the GFCM Communication, working knowledge of English and French (Level C) is desirable and a limited knowledge (Level B) of Spanish or Arabic would be an asset (for consultants). For the CFI Communication, working knowledge of English and French (Level C) is desirable and a limited knowledge (Level B) of Spanish would be an asset (for consultants). For both position, working knowledge (Level C) of one of FAO’s official languages. Level B of another official language is desirable (for PSAs).

  • Ability to communicate science to general audiences and policy makers
  • Ability to develop and implement communication strategies
  • Experience or familiarity with fisheries issues would be an asset
